Dog Show and More Terminology 101

SHOWS

  • AOE - Award of Excellence-A dog must meet qualifications in conformation, obedience, and also be OFA'd to earn this award.
  • BIS - Best in Show at an All-Breed Show in conformation.
  • BISS - Best in Specialty Show
  • BPIB - Best puppy in Breed
  • BPIG - Best puppy in group
  • BPIS - Best puppy in show
  • BPISS - Best puppy in specialty show
  • BISS - Best in Show Specialty (where only dogs of the same breed are competing in conformation)
  • BOB - Best of Breed
  • BOS - Best Opposite Sex to Best of Breed
  • BOW - Best of Winners (best between Winners Dog and Winners Bitch in breed conformation class competition)
  • BW: Best of Winners
  • RWD/RWB - Runner up to the winners dog and bitch, if the winner becomes ineligible for the award then the runner up will receive the points awarded from that show.
  • WB - Winners Bitch - the winning bitch overall of the regular classes of her sex.
  • WD - Winners Dog - the winning dog overall of the regular classes of his sex.
  • BJH: Best Junior Handler
  • BOH: Breeder, Owner, Handler
  • CH: Has completed the requirements to be entitled to a Canadian Kennel Club Champion of Record. When a championship title was earned in a foreign country, it must be preceded with country of origin of award, i.e., Mex Ch., Am. Ch., etc. CKC title awarded to dogs who have been awarded at least 10points - AKC 15 points, including two majors in the breed ring, where their conformation to the written standard of excellence for their breed is judged.
  • ROMC - Canadian ROM
    ROM/C - designates that the dog has earned an American and a Canadian ROM.
  • Special - A dog that is already a Champion that is competing for Best of Breed or Best of Opposite. A Champion cannot compete in the classes where points are earned (because a Champion has already earned them!)

  • vWD - Von Willebrands Disease free-meaning the dog has been tested and found free of vWD, a bleeding disorder, vWD free ratings also are often given with a percentage listed.   • AI: Artificial Insemination
  • CERF: Canine Eye Registry Foundation (A group of board certified Veterinary Ophthalmologists who maintain a registry of purebred dogs that the ACVO Diplomats (members) examine and have found to be unaffected by major heritable eye disease. CERF also maintains a research data base which consists of information that is generated by all examinations done by ACVO Diplomats. Reports generated from this resource help breeders and ophthalmologists identify trends in eye disease and breed susceptibility. CERF is dedicated to educating the public on matters involving canine eye disease. CERF provides a variety of reports, the CERF newsletter and other eye disease materials to help educate the owner/breeder on heritable eye disease questions, healthy breeding stock, and breed- specific eye problems)
  • OFA: Orthopedic Foundation for Animals A research, diagnostic, and registration organization of veterinary orthopedists whose mission is to organize, collate and disseminate information concerning orthopedic and genetic disease of animals. To advise, encourage control and establish programs to lower the incidence of orthopedic and genetic diseases. To encourage and finance researches in orthopedic and genetic disease in animals.
